“I had a farm in Africa…” has been my dream to visit the Karen Blixen farm. Happy to be there and photos show it… Glenn is of the opinion I only like her because she drank champagne, and ate oysters and grapes in her old age!!! Sound like a good diet to me!!! We visited a couple of other sites and had some fun petting …
Left a rather grey Nairobi and arrived at the Masai Mara, our arrivals hall was a white table cloth and the bush, I knew immediately this was going to be a great safari experience!!! We did not have to go far to run into elephant and various antelope including the Thomson Gazelle – looks a bit like a Springbok and a first sighting for me. …
Started early, wakeup call at 4:45am…. and that was after Glenn woke me up during the night! He had jumped out of bed and was sure we had an “intruder”. It took some convincing but eventually he agreed that no animal had joined us in our tent and I was able to go back to sleep… We were off on a balloon safari which is …
Agreed to head back and try to experience the migration. Off to the Mara River and the Sand River for an all-day excursion visiting crossing points in search of the herds. First stop, the hippo pool to take another look at the huge pod of hippos sunning themselves on the river bank. Unfortunately, no herds at the Mara River so it was off to the …
Time for some exercise, did a hike up the Oloololo escarpment before breakfast, then the start of our onward journey. Magnificent view of the Masai Mara and the animal activity. Saw a fresh giraffe carcass with about 20 vultures at it, am sure the lions or hyenas would arrive later in the day! Had to say goodbye to Bateleur Camp and head for Tanzania. The …
6am we headed out with our guide to watch the herds of wildebeest interacting and tried to witness a kill (ambitious). Also on the lookout for cheetah and leopard. May need a vacation from my vacation, seem to be rather short nights. They were everywhere, as far as your eye could see the wildebeest were grazing and, on the move, every now and then getting …
Day 7 – Circle of life – herds of wildebeest, carcasses, predators, scavangers. Read More »
Morning coffee in our tent and Glenn is off, sunrise photo opportunity!!! Packed and ready for breakfast we headed back to main camp quite keen to get a photo of the ant “crossing”. This meant focusing on the path looking for the ants rather than being aware. At some stage I looked up to see all the staff huddled in one group staring at us, …
By the time we went down to breakfast the chefs were hard at work. The tandoor oven was on, and a leg of pork was smoking for dinner – how awesome is that. Time for some exercise, cycling through the Myoka community where you find the Mang’ati tribe. The cycle included a visit to the local school and then to the 3 districts – district …
Spent most of the morning on a jeep – did see lions again and again. It took about 2.5 hours to get to Lake Manyara airport where we waited for our next ride to the Crater. That was another 1.5 hours with a stop to buy a permit and again at the view point for a photo opportunity!!! We were happy to reach the lodge. …
