After a leisurely lunch back at camp, headed out again at 4pm, no time for a shower. It was raining as we left camp but we were rewarded with a migration – thousands of wildebeest were migrating across the plains, walking, running, grazing en mass as they head off with their babies heading back north to central Serengeti. What a sight! They sound like an “orchestra” in the bush. I am always amazed at the pace at which they move.
Then it was a return to the cheetah and her cubs to watch another hunt. This time she was after a baby wildebeest and had not eaten for 3 days. The chase after she sped off was thrilling but the result disappointing, unsuccessful again. We all agreed she would not be a candidate for any of my searches!!! Zero for 3!!!
What did we see or hear?
Hyena feast – We got to see a hyena family – mom, dad and young child feasting on an adult wildebeest, you could hear the crunching of the bones… Based on the bite marks, it was their own kill and a fairly fresh one. The hyena were surrounded by vultures and Marabou stork who were anxious awaiting their turn. Every time they got too close, they were chased away by the hyena. The hyena decided to drag the kill away and left a piece – within seconds it was devoured. In the distance you could see hyenas making their way across the plain to join the feast.
Cheetah hunt – mom and babies had found a herd and started to walk into the middle of the heard. Mom kept scanning for babies and the best newborn wildebeest. Surprised she did this, it make her rather conspicuous. Then she found her target and was off, but they got away! Another failed hunt.
