Day 11, Valentine’s day in the bush

In the early hours of the morning had a thunderstorm, woke us up but then I crashed again. Cannot say the same for Glenn and Wayne who showed by for our full day on the Landcruiser a bit tired… Day started wet and cold. We were off at 6:30am and had planned to be out until 4pm – breakfast and lunch packed. Was a bit concerned about what we would see but the bush is always full of surprises. We explored different areas and looked for the cheetah again to see if they would hunt. We stopped for breakfast in the middle of an enormous heard of wildebeest and zebra and close to a den of about 13 hyenas – Simonne was not a fan! There were thousands of wildebeest as far as the eye could see. Zebras in single file on the horizon, looked like white dots. Perfect way to enjoy a morning coffee and hard-boiled egg.

We were off again and found Cheetah mom and her two cubs. They were preparing to hunt. Followed them for some time. When they took a break, we headed off for lunch near a Masai deserted camp. Decided to enjoy a glass of Diemersfontein sauvignon blanc with our lunch – a variety of delicious salads and some chicken. Perfect spread.  The rest of the afternoon was spent watching a failed cheetah hunt!!! Best part of the hunt is when the cheetah takes off – so do we as then it is safe to follow in our safari vehicle. High speed off road in the bush is a thrill… Simonne’s favorite…

Long day – got back to camp at 6:30pm. Wayne was done in and voted for 2 drives on day 3 versus 1 long drive. Only got to shower at 7pm. Decided I had earned a glass of bubbly – sat at the fire and shared stories with other guests. Dinner was quite the spread – tomato soup, beef and chocolate pudding (Wayne was happy). We enjoyed a lovely glass of Sutherland Shiraz with our meal, perfect pairing.
