Our goodbye could not have been more perfect. Breakfast was a throwback to my childhood – jaffles (a grilled breakfast sandwich), my Mom made these growing up and raised funds for the Girl Guides and Boy Scouts by selling jaffles at the show grounds. A real reminder of growing up in South Africa… Inspired to buy a few jaffle irons for our new outdoor bbq area and make these for lunch. Will introduce our granddaughter Gwen to this tradition
We had opted for a game drive on the way to the airport in search of elephants… We lucked out as we saw a few fabulous sightings on the way:
Cheetah and babies – after crossing the river, we ran across the same mother and babies we saw the previous days and finally, they have a kill, a baby wildebeest!!! Simonne whooped when she saw the kill. They had been without a kill for 3 days; she was just so excited. All the vehicles and cheetah looked at Simonne, what is your problem???
Flamingoes and hippos – driving along lake Ndutu we suddenly came across flocks of flamingo and 3 hippos, Wayne was happy as he wanted to see hippos.
Heard of elephants – Mohammed came through – he found a magnificent herd of elephants. 20 in one spot feeding and interacting, herd ranged from a 7-day old baby to the huge matriarch. There were an additional 3 off to the right but we stayed focused on the main heard and just loved watching them.
Wrapping up our trip with the elephants was the icing on the cake. What more could we have asked for. Time to say goodbye.
3 flights, first done and dusted, negative COVID test and we are on our way home… got to mention the Qatar Airways experience was better than Cathay Pacific, food and service exceptional!!!
Have just taken some time to read all your blog posts about this amazing trip! I feel transported – don’t want it to end! Returning to reality – my study, and hot and dry Grahamstown!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful experience! So enjoyed your descriptions of the trek, the gorillas, the surroundings, the food – just fabulous! I have ‘armchair travelled’ with you every step of the way (and pretty pleased it was you doing the hike, because I would definitely not be fit enough!!). Safe trip home to LA! xxx
Debbie, glad you enjoyed the blog. Just back in LA and posting the last of my photos over the next couple of days. The hike was a tough one. Good luck with the studies and hopefully see you once we return September/October through April /May 2023.
