Day 13 – Etsha 13, Guma Lagoon

Coffee on the deck watching the sunrise over Guma Lagoon is how we started the day. What a magnificent sight. At 8am we headed out by speedboat with our Mokoro “drivers” across the lagoon to Mokoro Island. There we picked up our Mokoro’s and headed out for a tour of the delta. The Mokoro is a traditional boat used in the delta, in the past it was a dug out log and today is made our of fibre glass, seats two and is propelled by a boats man who stands in the boat and propels it with a long pole similar to a gondolier. Sitting inches off the water we glided quietly through water channels surrounded by tall common reeds, bulrushes and papyrus. The water around us was covered with water lilies and their pads. The water was crystal clear and you could see the root system of the lilies. Bird life was abundant, loved seeing a pair of fish eagles take flight, and there were crocs though fairly small, am waiting to see the 5 metre croc… What was interesting about our journey is the contrast in vegetation. Some channels we went through had thick grass and it looked like we were floating through a meadow. We stopped at one of the islands for a nature walk and a picnic lunch. Headed back around midday gliding through the channels to Mokoro Island for our return journey to our campsite. I whiled away the afternoon reading a Deon Meyer novel. At 4pm, Michaela, Melissa and Dan did their helicopter ride. Given this is a sightseeing heli ride the doors were removed for better viewing and photography. It was exhilarating and they came back with stories of elephant and hippo sightings and are ready for their next heli ride!!! Glenn and I decided to take our showers while they were out and unfortunately the shower had deteriorated, it ran out of water – fortunately I managed a bit of a shower dancing around avoiding the scalding and freezing water, however Glenn had to pass on his shower and find some bottled water to completed his shaving as the water ran out midway. I guess the campsite was full and the tanks empty, took about two hours before the water tanks were full and the water back in our campsite. Dinner was divine though we did almost loose our steaks. They were sitting out ready – salted and peppered by Melissa and resting. An African wood owl spotted them and settled in the tree watching for an opportunity to pounce. It was great observing him, once he realized he was out of luck he left. We sat down to sirloin steaks, “pap” and chakalaka sauce, steamed baby carrots and a greek salad with some lovely Terra Del Capo 2010 Sangiovese. Everyone played a role in the dinner prep and it was scrumptious, there were no leftovers. We finished off the evening back at the bar for a whisky and some more local story telling.
