An early and windy start, a bit of work email, some coffee and we hit the road for Chobe National Park again. We were at the gate by 8:30am. We had a long day of driving through the park, again had awesome sightings though the morning started off a little slow due to the wind. We had learnt that Chobe has “stretch points”, these are spots where you can get out of your car and take a break. Quite necessary as the roads are hard work and both drivers and passengers need a break from bouncing around and the stopping and starting for the photgraphers (the girls – Dana, Michaela, Melissa and I). Our first stop was coffee at a stretch point with an incredible view of the park (also took a funny picture of the girls doing their stretches). What I found quite interesting was the ever-changing landscape – one area Glenn commented if you took away the limited vegetation it looks like a picture of the Mars landscape. It varied from wetland where the Chobe river runs along the border of Namibia and Botswana, to grassy planes and forest with autumn colours. We continued to see game like yesterday. For me the most interesting sighting was the sleeping elephants. We saw three in total, did some internet research when we had access and learnt that elephants sleep lying on their side on the ground. A first for me. Need to look into this a bit more.
We stopped in Kasane at Choppies to buy our last supplies for the trip. Dinner was a potjie by chef Andy!!! When we turned of to head to Senyati Campsite there were warning signs regarding the deep sandy road, just when we thought we had made it!!! Our campsite was slightly crowded, I think high season is in full swing. Nevertheless it was lovely. Each campsite has its own ablution facilities and electricity with internet access between 5pm and 9pm. They also have a bar and viewing bunker situated at a waterhole that is frequented by elephant, hyena, baboons, impala and Kudu. We only arrived around 4pm and decided a beer or in my case boxed wine with ice was necessary as we watched the elephants descend on the waterhole. Awesome to see them drink and play. Dinner was delicious and it was not long before our bed was calling. It had been a long day of driving and interrupted sleep the night before.
