We slept in and enjoyed our morning coffee and rusk at the viewing deck watching the animals interact and some extensive frolicking by the baboons… I finished my book and did a little email though had to wait until we got to Zimbabwe to send it. Also had a couple of calls to make and managed to find enough network coverage to get those done. My deal is moving forward, hopefully close it Monday 4th August fingers crossed!!! We were all tired of the dust and driving, opted for one of the sunset game cruises on the Chobe River. It was about 3+ hours and started downtown behind the Spar and headed around the Sedudu. A disputed island that was awarded to Botswana by the International Court of Justice in 1999, ruling accepted by Namibia. This was the ultimate finale to an amazing trip. We saw herds of elephant (what I had been waiting for) drinking, playing in the water and mud, swimming from island to island… Our notable sightings:
- We were rewarded with one of the most incredible sightings ever, a heard of elephant swam from one island to the next at sunset – have only seen this once before in 1994 when I went canoeing on the Zambezi with Mary, a very special moment and the timing was perfect for our group of aspiring photographers…
- Dazzle of zebras – everywhere
- Gulp (yes that’s the collective noun) of cormorants, drying their wings in the sun
- Impala by the hundreds
- Herds of buffalo
- Hippos in the water and out grazing peacefully amongst the impala
- Crocodiles out sunning themselves along the banks of the river keeping an eye on the tourists, probably hoping for an easy catch
- Abundant birdlife
- Perfect sunset!!!
This was our last night of camping and dinner was a traditional South African braai of boerewors and kudu fillet steak followed by apple crumble baked on the fire in our potjie. A perfect end to our camping and road trip adventure!
